Second Annual “Bipartisan Team” to Run OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon to Support Indy Reads

Indianapolis — The 2016 Presidential election has seen unprecedented, over-the-top partisan rhetoric as national politicians run against each other and move towards the November election. Closer to home, here in Indianapolis, a bipartisan trio has found a reason to run together this May – with a focus on bipartisan leadership and support for literacy in Indianapolis.

For the second year, former Indianapolis City/County Council Vice President John Barth (D) and Councilor Jeff Miller (R) will run the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon together to demonstrate the power of bipartisan cooperation and to raise money for a key Indy non-profit: Indy Reads. This year, Barth and Miller will be joined in running 13.1 miles by Indianapolis City/County Council President Maggie A. Lewis.

Indy Reads is a nonprofit with the mission to promote and improve the literacy of adults and families in Central Indiana. Barth, Miller and Lewis are asking supporters to donate either $13.1 (half-marathon) or $26.2 (full-marathon) to Indy Reads to sponsor their mini-run on Saturday, May 7th. Donations can be made on-line at http://www.indyreads.org/donate

Barth, an Indy Read’s board of advisors member, said, “I’m proud to support the 500 Festival and Indy Reads, two critical Indianapolis nonprofit organizations. Indy Reads serves a very important role that is close to my heart – promoting literacy.”

“We appreciate former Council VP Barth, Councilor Miller and President Lewis’s support for our literacy programs,” said Indy Reads Executive Director Travis DiNicola.

“I’m excited that this “bipartisan team” is becoming an annual event – I hope others will take this opportunity to support Indy Reads and their important work,” said Miller, who represents a Southside district.

2016 marks Miller’s 21st Mini-Marathon, Barth’s 11th, and Lewis’s first.

Now in its 40th year, the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon is the nation’s largest half-marathon. As the 500 Festival’s largest fundraiser and a vital part of the city’s civic fabric, proceeds from the race help fund the 500 Festival’s free program and events. The 13.1-mile course stretches from downtown Indianapolis to the famed 2.5 mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and ends downtown in Military Park.
