Election Victory!

It is an honor to be elected to serve as an at-large member of the Indianapolis City/County Council. My campaign has been spent meeting thousands of people in neighborhoods, listening, and learning. Everyone I met has the same love for our city – and the same ambitions. They want to live in a community that is safe and welcoming, a place with good schools and good jobs. They want to be included in the decisions being made by the mayor and Council. Simply put, neighbors want their voices heard. This is why listening to the people and serving as an advocate for neighborhoods will be my continued commitment.

The Indianapolis Star has endorsed John for City/County Council At-Large! The Star’s endorsement can be read in full below.

As published in the Indianapolis Star on October 26, 2011:

City government shouldn’t think just about helping neighborhoods, says Democratic candidate John Barth. It also should tap into their power.

An active member and former president of the Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association, Barth tells of a successful effort to remove parking meters from the 38th and Illinois streets area a few years ago, based on neighborhood association canvassing of merchants who said the machines hurt business.

As a civic activist and as a political candidate, Barth has continued knocking on the doors of residents and city officials alike. Recently, he helped lead a remonstrance that persuaded the city and the Army Corps of Engineers to rethink a controversial flood wall project along the Central Canal.

A health-care compliance executive with deep family roots in the city, he stresses education, jobs and economic development as well as neighborhood attention. He says the mayor’s office and City-County Council need to broaden their vision in areas such as mass transit and long-term financing of infrastructure, and declares that the community will buy in if it is honestly informed as to costs and benefits.

Barth is his own best example of an informed and involved resident. His elevation to the council would make it more responsive to both big ideas and block-level concerns.

Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors Endorsement

On September 23, 2011, the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors PAC announced its endorsements for the 2011 municipal elections. John was honored to be one of four candidates running for City/County Council At-Large to have received an endorsement. Fraternal Order of Police Endorsement

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #86 announced endorsements for the 2011 General Municipal Elections in Marion County on September 2, 2011. John Barth received an endorsement as an At-Large candidate for City/County Council. It is a great honor to receive this endorsement from the men and women who protect and serve our community. Primary Campaign Victory!

May third was a great victory for my campaign and for Marion County Democrats and we have many people to thank: our volunteers, supporters and especially the Marion County Democratic Party, which worked so hard to share our vision for the residents of Indianapolis with voters. I am honored to be part of our 2011 team and will work tirelessly until November to meet voters across our city and let them know we will always put their interests first.

Let’s elect a great Democratic Team – Melina Kennedy for mayor and my fellow at-large City-County Council candidates Zach Adamson, Leroy Robinson and Joanne Sanders.

What’s Next? City Must Turn its Attention to Neighborhoods

Beginning with the February 6th edition, the Indianapolis Star kicked off a year-long series focused on thinking about what’s next for our city. That day’s paper saw the publication of the story “Beyond the Big Game: Trying to Build on our Sports Success,” which provided a bright spotlight on what our city has done to revitalize downtown. Our elected leaders, civic groups, business community, and residents joined forces to create a vibrant downtown, and their success is unquestioned. However, the story also pointed out that our neighborhoods have not shared in that success. Our success downtown can, and must, be replicated in neighborhoods around our city, but it will take the same focused attention, collaboration, commitment, and shared vision to expand the revitalization throughout our city, block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood. John Brings Attention to Neighborhood Issue

John participated in a press conference with Mayoral Candidate Melina Kennedy aimed at bringing attention to the plan to construct a flood wall along the East side of the White River Canal that threatens the beauty of the mid-north neighborhoods and could affect access and use of the Central Canal. John strongly supports Melina’s position “to stop this proposal from advancing until there is further review and discussion.” Good planning requires interactive input from neighbors and John will be attending upcoming meetings to work to find a solution that works for the whole community. The event was covered by both Channel 13 and the Indianapolis Star.

John Files for City/County Council At-Large

After being endorsed during the Marion County Democratic slating convention, John today filed to run for an At-Large seat on the Indianapolis City/County Council in the May primary.

“Our city faces challenges, but above all we must put our residents first in every policy and financial decision we make. Every choice today can have long-term consequences for our community, and I look forward to being an advocate for neighborhoods on the city/county council,” Barth said.

Slating Results

I am tremendously honored to be a slated Democratic candidate for an At-Large seat on the Indianapolis City/County Council. A big thank you to all my volunteers and supporters for their hard work leading up to and during the Slating Convention held on February 12, 2011. I now look to the primary and am ready to launch a neighborhood-focused campaign aimed at bringing attention to the importance of thriving neighborhoods to the city’s economic, cultural and educational future.
